Boeing brings its Curiosity Machine to CPL Earlier this month, a group of children created air-powered spinning machines based on the Boeing CST-100 spacecraft with Boeing engineers. Jealous? We all are. On Thursday, July 9, CPL’s Mabel Manning Branch, in the Near West side, hosted Boeing volunteers to assist with a Curiosity Machine activity featuring a design challenge based on the Boeing CST-100, a spacecraft Boeing actually developed. The activity was fitting for the space-themed Summer Learning Challenge. The Curiosity Machine is an interactive experience that connects real-life engineers with children to complete engineering challenges ranging from engineering a space tool to building an edible skyscraper using basic and affordable materials. At the Manning Branch, children watched a video featuring a Boeing engineer, then created air-powered spinning machines using balloons, straws, cups and tape. Boeing volunteers assisted with every step of the design process, from planning to inflating balloons. Try this activity and other STEM-based projects at home with your kids by visiting The Curiosity Machine website. Boeing is a major sponsor of the Foundation-funded Summer Learning Challenge. |
