KPMG Puts 38,000 Books in the Hands of Library Kids

KPMG donated 38,000 books as part of the Chicago Public Library's Rahm's Readers Summer Learning Challenge. The donated books also form the basis for a long summer's worth of great reading!

If you had 38,000 ribbons, you could tie a bow around the Earth. The typical cruising altitude of an airplane is 38,000 feet. It can be concluded that 38,000 is a big number.

Now, imagine 38,000 books.

KPMG, one of the largest professional services companies in the world, doesn’t need to. This summer, the company joined with the Chicago Public Library’s Rahm’s Readers Summer Learning Challenge to donate 38,000 books through its KPMG Family for Literacy Program. This is the program’s single largest donation in history.

Pat Canning, Managing Partner at KPMG, notes that children in many Chicago communities simply don’t have access to books.

“The Chicago business community should take an active role in preparing today’s youth to be the next generation of business leaders, by encouraging reading skills at an early age,” he stated in an Op Ed column in the Chicago Tribune. “Having access to books is key.”

KPMG founded its Family for Literacy program seven years ago in collaboration with the nonprofit social enterprise First Book. To date, KPMG has donated more than 2.5 million books to children in need across the country, including 100,000 books in Chicago.

KPMG's donation will be used as incentive prizes for kids participating in the Summer Learning Challenge. We thank KPMG for this wonderful donation and for their generous sponsorship of the Summer Learning Challenge.
