Explore and Roar Kicks Off this Summer

Made possible by generous donors to the Library Foundation

The 2014 Summer Learning Challenge gets under way on June 9th and promises to be an educational — and fun-filled — eight weeks of reading, learning and creating for children, teens and their parents. With a focus on animals, the environment and conservation, Explore and Roar will incorporate STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, art and math) learning activities related to zoos, conservation and habitat creation.

We still need your critical support to roll out the program by June 9th! Just $10 sponsors one child in the eight-week program, while $100 covers the cost of field trips for 50 kids. Give today and help a child have a rich summer of learning and discovery.

Partnerships with the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) the Brookfield and Lincoln Park Zoos, and the Anti-Cruelty Society will bring Explore and Roar to life -- literally! Kids will take field trips to the zoos and get up close and personal with their favorite animals. Participants will make hand crafted -- from sustainable materials -- pet toys through the Anti-Cruelty Society. And MSI will host a night-time reading event for Summer Learning Challenge participants; they’ll bring their favorite book to the Museum and read amidst the exciting exhibits.

Once again this year, participants can earn digital “badges” from institutions throughout Chicago as they reach specific learning milestones. The Library will offer Read, Learn and Create badges which are awarded via an online portal, when kids complete learning challenges.

Explore and Roar learning challenges for participants include Reading for 20 minutes per day, aiming for a summer total of 300 minutes; Learning through field trips and STEAM related programs at branch libraries, and Creating artifacts in response to design challenges. Kids will also have opportunities for self-directed visual or literary expressions.

In addition to all that fun, learners who complete the program's challenges will be entered into a raffle to win an eReader. Each one of the 80 branches will have one winner selected. Parents who complete the challenge with their children will also be entered into a separate raffle for the latest "techie" gadgets that include a laptop, tablet, and digital camera.

We thank our dedicated Summer Learning Challenge sponsors, donors and partners for your generous contributions that will provide more than 72,000 kids and teens, and their parents, with a rich summer of learning and discovery. Thank you for your support!
