Winter Learning Challenge: Neighborhood Nature

Read, discover and create over winter vacation with the Chicago Public Library Neighborhood Nature Winter Learning Challenge starting December 16.

Research indicates that children lose skills when school is out.  The two-week winter break is an optimal time to explore all the library has to offer and continue learning with the Winter Learning Challenge.  The program is a self-paced learning challenge that invites children to explore nature in their neighborhood by investigating one or more of the five themes—humans, pets, pigeons, squirrels and trees.

To complete the challenge, children are encouraged to Read, Discover and Create. What animals stay in Chicago in winter? How do people and animals stay warm when it's cold outside?  Children explore these topics by reading for 20 minutes a day for at least 5 days; discovering new information about nature in their neighborhood by doing 1 activity; and creating 1 story, poem or piece of artwork.

Starting on December 16, kids can track their progress by picking up a log from their neighborhood library or downloading the log at chipublib.org. Suggested books and activities are also available through the Chicago Public Library website.

Kids who turn in their completed log to a neighborhood library by January 10, 2014 are entered to win an eReader!

The Winter Learning Challenge is proudly funded by the Chicago Public Library Foundation through the generous support of Foundation donors.
