21st Century Learning Labs

Learning is undergoing an evolution...and the Chicago Public Library is where that evolution is taking place.

Technology has evolved. The workplace--and workforce--have evolved. Learning itself is undergoing an evolution...and the Chicago Public Library is a learning environment where that evolution is taking place.

At the newly renovated Humboldt Park branch, which re-opened on February 9th boasting a 5,000 square foot expansion for a children's library and a dedicated YOUmedia digital learning space, middle and high school students have the opportunity to engage in hands-on science projects.

In partnership with Northwestern University's FUSE Studio, Humboldt Parks' YOUmedia is science focused, offering programming with STEM-based (science, technology, engineering and math) concepts. FUSE is mentor-led with low-barrier, hands on, computer-based learning challenges on a wide variety of STEM topics. YOUmedia + FUSE is generously funded by Boeing and the Motorola Solutions Foundation.

In YOUmedia + FUSE, kids have the option to "hang out" and see what other kids are working on or join in on the communal LEGO Star Wars Death Star that's being built (comprised of 3,803 pieces!). They can "mess around" with entry-level projects such as wiring up different colored LED lights to produce new color combinations or; "geek out" by building LEGO Mindstorm (customizable and programmable) robots or developing mobile phone ringtones and apps.

Kids have to look no further than their local branch library to engage in stimulating activities that encourage 21st century skills--without the classroom feel. YOUmedia + FUSE is interest-driven, as a result, students don't feel like they're being “taught” because the topic is personally interesting and relevant. YOUmedia + FUSE is designed as a "level-up" approach where students build upon the knowledge and skills acquired through an earlier project.

“Modern learning requires modern tools, technology and access to the best resources so our leaders of tomorrow have the skills to compete in an ever complex, global workforce. Today's workplace not only requires the fundamentals of reading, writing and math but also critical thinking, communication, collaboration skills and creativity, as well as digital, media and information literacy.” stated Commissioner Brian Bannon.

With the support of the City and the Chicago Public Library Foundation's funding partners, the Chicago Public Library has created an environment where students have the opportunity to gain, practice and build upon critical skills that open up educational and economic possibilities.
