Matching Gift from Sun-Times Foundation Funds Out-of-School Learning for 10,000 Students

Double Your Dollars for Chicago Students

To help us welcome kids back to the Library this fall, the Chicago Sun-Times Foundation, a fund of the Chicago Community Trust, matched your investments dollar-for-dollar—and we raised $100,000 to fund out-of-school learning for up to 10,000 students!

This investment helps students like 12-year-old Malachi, who credits Dr. Coleman, the Teacher in the Library at the Avalon Branch at 81st and South Stony Island for “being like a second mother” who reviews his homework, explains tough reading, math and science concepts and counsels him on school projects.

With his determination and Dr. Coleman’s help, Malachi has been accepted into one of Chicago's leading tuition-free academic enrichment programs. His goal of attending an elite private high school, and then on to MIT and an engineering degree is now closer at hand.

For tens of thousands of Chicago’s children, learning doesn’t end at the close of the school day—it continues at one of the 79 Chicago Public Library locations throughout the city.

Every afternoon, kids flock to the Library for homework help from a certified Teacher in the Library. They come to complete school assignments on one of 2,500 public access computers and receive computer tutoring from specially trained CyberNavigators. Teens pursue their creativity at five YOUmedia digital learning centers and imagine “cool science” robotics and engineering feats in ScienceConnections.

Thank you for ensuring that more Chicago students flourish in a strong out-of-school learning environment!
